St. Nikola
Churches and monasteries in Varos
The church St Nicholas in Varosh is one of the most significant objects in Macedonia from the Byzantium period, on which facades easily can be seen two phases. The primary, small single-arc church was built of stone by using antique semi columns and it was built about the year 1200. The secondary building phase i.e. today’s church look with rich ceramic-plastic decoration on the facades was dated from the year 1298 and it was a reflection of characteristic movements in the Late Byzantium architecture. In 1959 archeological researches were started in the church and around it, and the process of the church architecture and fresco painting was realized in the years 1961 and 1962. In 1977 drainage channel was done around the church and after the research works on the coverage construction a temporary roofwas set.
